Supporting children to access education through understanding, not assumption.

Specialist Training & Support Packages for Schools and Settings

At Butterfly OT, we provide specialist training and consultation designed to support children with sensory processing differences, motor coordination needs, and emotional regulation difficulties to access education.

Our training goes beyond theory.
We focus on practical, immediately usable strategies, underpinned by clinical reasoning and real-life application in classrooms.

All training is delivered by a specialist paediatric Occupational Therapist with advanced experience in sensory integration, neurodevelopment, and EHCP provision.

What Makes Our Training Different?

  • Links sensory processing + regulation + behaviour and how to support access to education
  • Grounded in clinical practice
  • Focus on what staff can actually do starting NOW!
  • Incorporates real case examples and problem-solving
  • Emphasis on inclusion, not compliance

"I can't say enough about the outstanding service we received from your Leia. The training went above and beyond to meet our needs and exceeded our expectations."

B.Tillley-SENCo

"Thanks so much for such an excellent session today. We all said afterwards that we should have booked you for at least a half day."

A. Harris SENCo

"Leia knew what she was talking about but made it easy to understand. I felt I could ask questions and didn't feel silly. I understand my students so much better, and I have even seen improvements within the last few days – they love starting the day egg-rocking!"

Staff - Hythe Bay Primary School

"Very informative and incredibly interesting – I didn't realise how much there was to the senses and the things that impact our children!"

Staff- Ryarsh Primary School

"I attended a parent coffee morning, and I have to say I was blown away. Leia explained things that now make my entire family make more sense – thank you so much!"

LT Parent - Valley Invicta Holborough Lakes

"I went to a coffee morning and have since booked the OT for an assessment of my child's needs – incredibly informative, knowledgeable, approachable and kind. I cant wait to see what she picks up with my son."

Introduction to sensory processing

This training provides staff with a clear and practical understanding of sensory processing differences and how they impact a child’s ability to engage, regulate, and participate in learning.

Staff will develop an understanding of how children may experience the world differently through their sensory systems, and how this can present in the classroom — often misunderstood as behaviour.

Key learning includes:

  • The 8 sensory systems and their role in everyday functioning
  • How sensory processing impacts attention, behaviour, and emotional regulation
  • Recognising sensory seeking, avoiding, and sensitivity patterns
  • Practical, classroom-based strategies to support regulation and participation

Outcome:
Staff will feel more confident in identifying sensory needs and implementing simple, effective strategies to support children throughout the school day.

Introduction to Sensory Processing and Primitive Reflex Retention

This session builds on sensory processing knowledge by introducing the role of retained primitive reflexes in children’s development, coordination, and regulation.

It explores how reflexes that should have integrated in early development can continue to influence posture, movement, attention, and emotional responses.

Key learning includes:

  • Overview of key primitive reflexes
  • How retained reflexes present in the classroom (e.g. fidgeting, poor posture, difficulty sitting still, emotional reactivity)
  • The link between reflex retention, sensory processing, and motor development
  • Practical movement-based strategies to support integration and regulation

Outcome:
Staff will gain a deeper understanding of why children struggle, moving beyond surface-level behaviour, and feel equipped with targeted strategies to support development.

Introduction to EBSA/PDA and ODD

This training supports staff to understand children whose behaviour may present as avoidance, refusal, or defiance, reframing these responses through a lens of anxiety, nervous system overwhelm, and unmet need.

It introduces key profiles such as EBSA and PDA, and differentiates these from more traditional behavioural frameworks.

Key learning includes:

  • Understanding EBSA: anxiety-based barriers to school attendance and engagement
  • Overview of PDA profile and demand avoidance as a stress response
  • Differentiating between “won’t” and “can’t”
  • The role of sensory processing and regulation in avoidance behaviours
  • Practical strategies to reduce demand, build trust, and support engagement

Outcome:
Staff will feel more confident responding to children with complex presentations using relational, regulation-focused approaches rather than escalating behavioural responses.

Sensory Circuits and how to Individualize Them

This training provides a practical framework for implementing sensory circuits within school settings, moving beyond generic approaches to create individualised, meaningful programmes.

Staff will learn how to structure circuits effectively and adapt them to meet the needs of different children and groups.

Key learning includes:

  • The purpose and structure of sensory circuits (alerting, organising, calming)
  • Why some children reject or struggle with circuits
  • How to individualise circuits based on sensory profiles and regulation needs
  • Examples of effective activities across different age groups and needs
  • Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

Outcome:
Staff will be able to design and adapt sensory circuits that are engaging, effective, and appropriate, improving regulation and readiness for learning.
